The effect of Si and silicide on leaching Al 2 O 3 from magnesium smelting reduction slag was studied in laboratory. The results show that total Si and partial SiO 2 would enter into leaching solution and react with NaAl(OH) 4 to form (Na 2 O·Al 2 O 3 ·SiO 2 ) 6 ·27H 2 O which is present in leaching residue and makes a loss of Al 2 O 3 .

Using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) equation, the Avrami exponent (n) is equal to ~0.5, and it depends on the reaction temperature and time; this indicates that the oxidation is controlled by the diffusion-controlled reaction.
